The Last Fifty Years
In the last fifty years, Arkansas has enjoyed the benefits from some remarkable people. Names like Walton, Hunt, Tyson, Dillard, Stephens, Murphy, and Clinton come to mind. Their willingness to take risks and use creative techniques spawned some of the most successful ventures of our time. Arkansas endured the trauma of the "Faubus" years and still bears the scars. We have seen an incredible growth in the Northwest corner of the state. We have been witness to a huge influx of retirees from other states spawning whole new towns. (Villages)
Can we learn from our successes and our mistakes?

Pulaski County Officials Refuse to enforce Litter Law
The Pulaski County Road and Bridge unit allows building contractors to litter County roads with huge clumps of mud despite complaints from citizens. Neighborhood residents then track mud into their garages and are forced to wash their cars more frequently. The streets become slippery during wet weather and are dangerous for travel. Most building sites have a water source and tires could be easily sprayed clean before entering the roadway.

Did You Know . . .
Columbia County is the only county in Arkansas that does not have a river. Magnolia is the county seat and Lake Columbia is its water supply. Several counties have two county courthouses. (seems odd) Hot Springs is the county seat of Garland County and Malvern is the county seat of Hot Springs County. (go figure) Benton is the county seat of Saline County and Bentonville is the county seat of Benton County. Batesville is the second oldest municipality in the state of Arkansas Lake Village is the county seat of Chicot County and sits beside Lake Chicot, the largest oxbow lake in North America and the largest natural lake in Arkansas. El Dorado is the county seat of Union County and recipient of Murphy Oil's "El Dorado Promise," the college scholarship program for their high school graduates. Jonesboro has one of the two courthouses of Craighead County and is home to Arkansas State University. Texarkana is the county seat of Miller County. The city, however, straddles the state line with Texarkana, Texas becoming a bi-state city. Russellville is the county seat of Pope County and is home to Arkansas Tech University and the only nuclear power plant in Arkansas. Stuttgart has one of two county courthouses in Arkansas County and is considered the Rice and Duck Capital of the World. North Little Rock, formerly Argenta, is home to the "Old Mill" seen in "Gone With The Wind." Fort Smith has one of the two county courthouses of Sebastian County and was home to Judge Isaac Parker, the famous "hanging Judge." Washington, population 148, was Arkansas's State Capital during the Civil War and was home to James Black, who is credited with creating the "Bowie Knife" carried by Jim Bowie. source: Wikipedia

Arkansas's natural bridge, located near Clinton off US highway 65 is for sale. Hidden away in the scenic beauty of the Ozarks, this 100-ft. sandstone formation was millions of years in the making. The stone archway was actually used as a bridge during pioneer days. Photo by Steve Stephens

An Arkansas Fishing Story
I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little later, I felt a nudge on my foot. There was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth. New Arkansas Disease . . . Utility Blight
There is a new visual blight on the roads in Arkansas. The utilities have poisoned the right-of-ways instead of clearing them and in the process, have created a visual blight on the highways and by-ways of Arkansas. Fire hazard . . . Not only is this practice a visual blight but during the months of August and September while burn bans were in place, the ten-foot pines were like torches waiting to be lit. This procedure may save the utilities a few dollars, but it comes at the expense of quality. Why advertise "Keep Arkansas Beautiful" if this reckless and destructive practice is allowed to continue?

Old Church in Arkansas City
Arkansas City was once a vibrant river town of over 10,000. It was virtually destroyed during the Flood of 1927 when the river changed course. Before 1927, the Mississippi River flowed mere yards from the main business district; now the Great River is found a mile to the east of the community. Photos by Michael Don Fess
